Chelsea in ‘advanced talks’ with Xabi Alonso

Chelsea are reportedly in “advanced talks” to appoint Xabi Alonso as head coach and want to make an announcement in the next few days.

The Blues are searching for a new manager after Liam Rosenior was sacked in April following a poor run of results.

Alonso is available after parting ways with Real Madrid in January, just seven months after he was installed as the first team boss.

According to BBC Sport, Chelsea have “accelerated their efforts” to hire Alonso ahead of the summer.

The west London outfit made contact with Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva and Oliver Glasner about potentially taking the job, but Alonso has emerged as their “preferred candidate”.

The report adds that Chelsea have been engaged in talks for “a number of weeks” and “want to announce a new manager in the coming days”. Alonso is said to be “open” to the role, but only if “certain assurances” are made.

The 44-year-old has also been linked with Liverpool, but the club may persist with Arne Slot despite a disappointing campaign.
