The Chargers did not exercise the fifth-year option on the contract of offensive lineman Zion Johnson, according to multiple sources.
The option would have paid Johnson $17.56 million for 2026.
Johnson now enters the final year of his contract and is scheduled to become a free agent next March.
Selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft, Johnson has started 49 games at both guard spots. He hasn't quite lived up to his billing, as he struggled particularly in pass protection.
Heading into the 2025 season, Johnson is expected to compete for the starting center spot. Should he earn a role as a starter at either center or left guard, Johnson will have to show the coaching staff improvements, and he's worth being re-signed.
