BOSTON — The Boston Celtics welcomed back former Green Teamers Robert Williams III and Jrue Holiday by doing what they did so often when they were still in Beantown: winning. The Celtics defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 102-94 on Monday night at TD Garden during Williams' first game against his former team and Holiday's first since 2023.
Oregon native Payton Pritchard, who grew up less than 30 minutes from Portland, recorded a game-high 23 points and 5 rebounds versus his hometown team. Celtics star Jaylen Brown also contributed 20 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists while rookie center Amari Williams notched a career-high 9 points in his best NBA game to date.
Holiday reminded the Celtics of what he's capable of with 14 points and 3 steals in 24 minutes. Williams did the same to a lesser degree with 6 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 block.
With forward Deni Avdija out with a back injury, the Blazers struggled to score early, notching just 11 points in the first quarter. They eventually warmed up, but still shot 25% from 3-point land.
The Celtics didn't excel on offense either. However, they kept the Blazers at bay to tie the season series 1-1 and improve to 29-17 on the season. The narrow victory keeps them in second place in the Eastern Conference.
Up next for the Celtics are the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night. They won't have to face a team above .500 until Wednesday, February 4th.
