Celtics Assistant Reportedly Among Top Three Finalists For Trail Blazers Head Coach Job originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Celtics and Portland Trail Blazers were both eliminated in the first round of the NBA Playoffs, but both teams have very different offseason needs.
For starters, the Trail Blazers are starting their offseason with a head coaching search. Head coach Chauncey Billups was placed on leave following his arrest on Oct. 23 last year. He coached just one game before he was replaced by Tiago Splitter. Splitter helped get the Trail Blazers to the playoffs, but he is just one of three finalists for the job, per NBA insider Jake Fischer.
Celtics assistant coach Tyler Lashbrook, Minnesota Timberwolves assistant coach Micah Nori and Splitter are reportedly the three finalists for the job.
Lashbrook joined the Celtics organization before the 2023-2024 season as a player development coach. Before joining the Celtics, he spent nine years with the Philadelphia 76ers. He has some experience as a head coach, but not in the NBA. He was the Main Celtics' head coach in the G- League in 2024.
That season, the team went 21-13 and was the No. 3 seed. Lashbrook was named G League Coach of the Month in February 2024 after going 7-1. Losing Lashbrook would be a significant blow for Joe Mazzulla's coaching staff, but Lashbrook seems overdue for an opportunity to serve as a head coach in the NBA.
