The Boston Celtics went all-in on Giannis Antetokounmpo before the NBA Draft.
While the Celtics were reportedly hesitant to move on from Jaylen Brown, ESPN’s Shams Charania confirmed that the 18-time NBA champions quickly changed their stance and offered the Milwaukee Bucks Jaylen Brown and two first-round picks for Antetokounmpo.
In the end, though, the Celtics whiffed on the 10-time All-Star on Monday night.
“BLOCKBUSTER: The Milwaukee Bucks are trading franchise icon Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat for Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, 3 first-round picks (including No. 13), 1 pick swap and 1 second-rounder,” Charania wrote on X/Twitter.
With the Celtics clearly open to moving Brown and the San Antonio Spursbeing linked to the 29-year-old star after their NBA Finals loss to the New York Knicks, it’s safe to say the Heat’s victory in the Antetokounmpo sweepstakes is good news for San Antonio.
Do the Spurs really need to add another playmaking wing? Not necessarily, given the fact that they already have more than enough to compete in the Western Conference.
That said, Brown isn’t an ordinary perimeter-oriented asset, as he’s a game-changing, downhill-heavy offensive juggernaut with an NBA Finals MVP on his impressive NBA resume.
The California product averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game with the Celtics in an expanded role (due to Jayson Tatum’s Achilles recovery), shooting 47.7% from the field and 34.7% from deep.
It wouldn't be overly surprising to witness the Spurs inquire about Brown this summer.
