Carter Bryant admits he was not surprised by Victor Wembanyama's contract decision originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Victor Wembanyama was eligible for a five-year contract extension worth $303 million. However, he took a significant pay cut, as he opted for a 25% rookie-scale maximum, which is worth $252 million.
While it is still a massive number, taking a $51 million discount gives the San Antonio Spurs improved salary cap flexibility, which helps them build the best team possible moving forward.
Carter Bryant had no surprises about Victor Wembanyama's new contract
The Spurs were close to one of the most impressive runs in recent memory. Unfortunately, they lost in the 2026 NBA Finals to the New York Knicks in five games. It was not the best result, but it was a promising run.
With the likes of Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper, the future is bright for the Spurs. This also includes Carter Bryant, who seems to fit the right mold of a wing player that the Spurs need in the long run.

Bryant himself seems unsurprised that Wemby took a pay cut. It just goes to show that Wembanyama is a big part of the Spurs' long-term plans, and he will do his best to strike the right balance between him getting paid and the team building the right team.
"I don't think anybody was surprised by that in terms of the type of person Vic is. He's a winner. So whatever he can do to make the team better, that's what he's going to do every time," Bryant said about Wemby's latest contract decision.
Moving forward, the Spurs have more room to operate in. They should be in a good spot with Wemby as their star player, but his contract decision continues to improve their long-term future.
