Summer McIntosh broke the 200-meter butterfly world record, swimming the race in in 2 minutes, 1.65 seconds at the Canadian trials on Sunday, July 5. It was the longest-standing individual women's swimming world record.
McIntosh, a three-time champion at the 2004 Paris Olympics, celebrated by splashing the water around her and smiling. China's Liu Zige set the previous record of 2:01.81 in 2009.
"As you can see my emotions, this is the absolute world," McIntosh said. "Growing up, this is the one world record I thought I would never break and to do it tonight is really special in front of a home crowd.
"I'm in shock right now."
McIntosh, 19, has four individual women's long-course world records. She also holds the 200- and 400-meter individual medley marks and 400-meter freestyle record, all set at last year's Canadian trials. McIntosh won three gold medals at the Paris Olympics in 2024, including in the 200 butterfly.
McIntosh, 19, is training in Austin, Texas, under coach Bob Bowman, who guided Michael Phelps to 23 Olympic gold medals. She will compete in the 400 IM on Monday, 400 free Tuesday and 200 IM on Wednesday ahead of the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California.
