The Phoenix Mercury are set to welcome the Indiana Fever on July 9 at Mortgage Matchup Center for the highly anticipated renewal of their contentious series, but one of the stars will be out.

Fever coach Stephanie White confirmed on July 8 that Caitlin Clark will be out against the Mercury.

"(Aliyah Boston) is gonna be out tonight (Wednesday)," White said. "Again, with the back-to-back, Caitlin a back-to-back, Caitlin is gonna be active tonight. AB is not. Then they'll flip-flop tomorrow night (Thursday in Phoenix)."

Aliyah Boston will be out tonight against the Sparks, and Caitlin Clark will be available, Steph White says.

Clark's status isn't shocking, as she told reporters on July 7 that she didn't anticipate playing in both games of the back-to-back, which begins in Los Angeles on July 8. Clark tweaked an ongoing back injury on June 24 while playing the Mercury in Indianapolis.

In that game, Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas was among three Mercury players scrambling for a loose ball with Clark. Upon Clark getting rid of the ball, Thomas hovered over her with a fist on her shoulder, which moved down to Clark's throat. Thomas then stood up and walked over Clark with the ball going the other way.

According to Thomas, the play was a "complete accident" and the team didn’t realize she put her fist to Clark’s throat until after the game when fans shared clips of the incident. The Fever players also didn't see the play happen in real time.

Since then, Fever players Boston and Sophie Cunningham have said strong words about the incident involving Thomas and Clark on their respective podcasts.

The game in Phoenix will be the conclusion of the season series between the teams.
