The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have embarked on their summer vacation before camp.
That doesn't mean they won't be working, though.
Bucs' right tackle Luke Goedeke made an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio last week and spoke about how the coaches and players have focused on making sure there isn't a repeat of last season's collapse. Goedeke says the coaches hammered home the need to improve the small details, showing them a chart of just how close the majority of Tampa's losses were last season, and how improving those details can lead to winning those exact kind of games.
“You win half of those games and you’re telling a completely different story [about 2025], Goedeke said. “With that being said, I would say a lot of [prep for 2026] is really focusing on the details as well as coming back bigger, stronger, faster — not taking this next month off just to be lackadaisical because that’s how injuries kind of show up and stuff. So really taking this time and pushing forward and working on the little things so we don’t beat ourselves.”
Even though the players won't be anywhere near One Buc Place over the next few weeks, that doesn't mean they can take it easy. Goedeke stressed the importance of staying sharp during the break and making sure they all arrive at training camp at the end of July in shape and ready to go.
The Bucs learned the hard way last season that the margin for error in the NFL is very small. If a few plays here and there had turned out differently, Tampa could have stayed atop the NFC South and in the playoffs.
Goedeke wants to make sure the team doesn't find itself in that position again this season, and believes staying focused on the job despite being away from the facility is key.
It seems like the coaches have now put the burden on the players to remain invested during their summer vacation. Goedeke's comments suggest it may have been a different message from what they heard last year, which was presumably to rest and focus on staying healthy.
The painful ending to Tampa's 2025 season should act as a terrific motivator for the team heading into the upcoming campaign. The coaches are hoping to tap into the players' disappointment and frustration over missing the postseason last year.
Goedeke, who is hoping for a healthy season after a foot injury that required a stint on IR last year, has gotten the message from his coaches to stay engaged over break loud and clear.
Let's hope everyone else got the message as well.
