After Tampa Bay head coach Todd Bowles acknowledged that Bucky Irving might not return until this fall, managers must make sense of the fantasy chaos. Let’s examine likely ADP scenarios for Irving, Sean Tucker, and Kenneth Gainwell.

Irving’s pass-catching abilities are unquestioned, stemming back to college. This alone makes him an invaluable fantasy asset with a huge floor. But managers drafting him anywhere near his RB20 ADP need more than a good floor. This kind of value is reserved for weekly must-start running backs. Irving now has two yellow flags.

The first is the timeline for recovering from shoulder surgery. Bowles’ comments have to be taken seriously. The team doesn’t know when he’ll be back, with a realistic range of outcomes as early as training camp and as late as... Thanksgiving?

The second yellow flag is how he fared after returning from foot and shoulder injuries last season. This team didn’t need to force him back prematurely. The backfield duo of Rachaad White and Sean Tucker was doing just fine.

Whether or not Irving wasn’t near 100% when he rejoined the club in Week 13, his diminished level of play was notable: 3.4 yards per carry on 101 attempts. Four of his six opponents were inside the top 10 in most yards per carry surrendered. These were primarily soft run defenses, and his play paled in comparison to the supposedly “lesser” White.

Kenneth Gainwell’s RB35 ADP suddenly looks more appealing, as does Sean Tucker’s RB60 ADP. The former could be a must-start RB in any games Irving misses, while Tucker could be a more TD-dependent streamer. Even if Irving returns by Week 1, the Bucs might recognize that they have three starter-caliber running backs, and that in a 17-game season with playoff aspirations, there’s no need to overwork Irving.
