NIL has forever changed the way college sports are played. There is no turning back, and the NCAA has to adjust to the changing landscape that it has created to this point.
Interestingly enough, NIL has also changed how NFL teams look at the incoming class of rookies each year.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht explained more on the Pat McAfee show Wednesday, pointing out that the NIL isn't the curse many see it as but actually a positive for the league.
"I thought going into this NIL thing a few years ago that we were going to be seeing that, the entitlement more so than not. But from my experience so far, I think it's just been the opposite," Licht said. "I think these players are coming in very well educated on how to handle their money, how to handle success. They already have a team of people who are investing their money... I think they're more mature about it now."
There are certainly athletes who have come out of the NIL era looking far more pompous than ever, but that isn't the case for everyone. In a way, Licht is right in that college athletes are now more financially stable and literate to move forward in their lives.
NIL has also changed the lives of so many athletes who may not have been able to afford the luxuries of being an athlete until they were actually drafted.
Whatever the case, NIL has become a hotly contested debate for many analysts and executives around college sports. Licht is one of the few who sees a benefit to that, though.
It will be interesting to see if his views continue as the years go by.
