The Brusly High baseball team hoped for a reversal of fortune in its second consecutive trip to the Division II Non-Select championship game, but timely hitting by Lutcher doused the Panthers' championship hopes.
BHS finished the season 35-8 under head coach Jason Lemoine.
Lutcher engineered a five-run rally in the bottom of the second that gave them the momentum to hold back the Panthers, 8-3, in Game 2 of the best-of-three series in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association State Championship Baseball Tournament at McMurry Park in Sulphur.
Both teams finished with five hits, but Lutcher only allowed Brusly a walk in the top of the sixth and sent back three consecutive Panther batters in the bottom of the seventh for the win.
LHS mounted a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but the Panthers responded in the next inning with an Aubrey St. Angelo solo homer to left and an Isaiah Daley run off an error at second. Daley reached first on a walk after he was hit by a pitch.
The Panthers trimmed Lutcher’s lead to 5-3 when Tate Tassin scored on an Isaiah Daley sacrifice fly to center, but Bulldog pitcher Dane Bodin struck out Coy Purpera to thwart a BHS comeback.
Brusly hoped to gain momentum in the top of the sixth when St. Angelo drew a walk with two outs, but Daley’s flyball to center sent the Panthers back on the field.
Two runs in the eighth pulled Lutcher past Brusly in the first game of the series.
Lutcher held back Brusly off a strikeout, a flyout and a ground for 6-4 victory in Game 1.
The Bulldogs broke the tie off an Andre Soriano run off a Dalton St. Pierre grounder on an error at shortstop in the top of the eight, followed by Eric St. Pierre’s game-winning line drive to center that brought home Eric St. Pierre for the win.
Aubrey St. Angelo struck out two of three and sent back another Lutcher batter on a fly to right in the top of the seventh, while Lutcher pitcher Dylan Delauneville struck out the Panthers St. Angelo to force extra innings.
An Eric St. Pierre fly to right with two outs put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0 in the top of the first.
The Panthers took the lead in the bottom of the inning when a Brayden Ray line drive to left brought home Isaiah Daley, who led with a ground single to second and Coy Purpera run off an error at home plate.
