Another strong performance by the Houston Rockets in the NBA Summer League resulted in a 100-83 win over the Brooklyn Nets.
Houston was on top early in the game as they finished the first quarter with a 15-point lead. Bruce Thornton was the primary ball handler and leader, as he has been throughout the first three games of the NBA Summer League.
Thornton accumulated 23 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Thornton was the top scorer in this match and eclipsed 20 points for the second game of his young career. These statistics strongly represent his efficiency on offense, but do not do justice to his outstanding defense. He consistently displayed his physical strength and hustle, which he used to put pressure on Mikel Brown and disrupt his perimeter shooting.
Brown was the sixth overall pick in the recent draft. Brown’s best attribute is mostly considered to be his shooting, including his three-point shooting. However, Brown struggled throughout the game because of Thornton’s and Houston’s outstanding defense. Thornton was the primary defender assigned to Brown, and Brown went 3-of-15 as he was held to 14 points.
Houston made a statement with their outstanding defense and forced Egor Dëmin into a poor shooting night. Dëmin has been the Nets’ top scorer in the first three games of the Summer League, averaging 20 points on 50% shooting.
Over the first three quarters of Dëmin’s matchup with the Rockets, he was held to shooting a measly 22% on 2-of-9. Houston’s suffocating defense forced him to miss all six of his three-point shots in the first three quarters.
Dëmin exploded for 17 points in the fourth quarter, going an impressive 5-of-10 from deep. However, the game was already out of reach at this point, and the Nets lost their spot in the playoffs of the NBA Summer League.
Over the first three games, the Nets were in third place in the standings while the Rockets were in fourth, as they both held a 2-1 record. This matchup carried with it high stakes, as only the winner could have a chance to advance to the playoffs while the losing team would be eliminated.
Despite being the underdog, Houston prevailed and is now waiting on the rest of the league’s games to conclude in order to determine the tiebreakers. With a 3-1 record, along with an average of +10.3 points. If the Rockets advance to the semifinals, will Thornton be able to lead the Rockets to the finals?
