He's done it! Ohio State senior point guard Bruce Thornton is the all-time leading scorer in Buckeye basketball history.
A record held by OSU legend Dennis Hopson (1983-1987) for nearly four decades fell Saturday afternoon in the final game of the regular season. With under a minute to play in the half against Indiana, Thornton launched a three-point shot that was as pure as they come. The swish put the Buckeyes up 50-33 before heading into the half.
The shot officially put the Georgia native at 2,097 career points, giving him one more than Hopson. Thornton joined Hopson before heading into halftime to be recognized for the career accomplishment. You can see the historic shot below hear Gus Johnson's exuberant call.
A four-year starter, Thornton has steadily improved his game over the years. As a freshman, he started every game, averaging 10 points per game, and now, as a senior averaging nearly 20 points per contest. In a world where it is much easier to run when things get difficult, Thornton chose to stay in Columbus after Chris Holtmann, the coach who recruited him, was fired midway through his sophomore season. The Buckeye point guard would have had plenty of suitors had he jumped in the transfer portal after a third year in a row of not making the NCAA Tournament. But he chose to stay and finish what he started, and now he will live on in the Ohio State record books.
The Buckeyes are currently projected to make the tournament field, but still have work to do. If they can finish things out against Indiana, their odds will be that much better, and Bruce Thornton will finally get a chance to play in the Big Dance.
