Cleveland's top draft pick, Spencer Fano, wasted no time on draft night expressing his praise and excitement to meet one of the best to ever do it, Joe Thomas.
It is not often that a young player says that his favorite player ever growing up was an offensive tackle, but here we are. Fano looked up to Thomas as a youngster, and on Wednesday, he finally got the opportunity to meet his hero. The entire interview between Thomas and Fano is available on the Cleveland Browns' YouTube and is linked below. It is worth the listen, and there is a zero percent chance that you don't at least crack a smile.
Fano is the one player that is getting looked over so far in this year's Training Camp. The conversation obviously begins at the quarterback position, and that storyline dominates the news cycle. If there are any other topics to get in, it is the youth movement at wide receiver and the top draft picks that the Browns got their hands on.
The forgotten player is Fano, and he is very likely the most important player from the Browns' draft. In theory, no news from the offensive tackle position is good news, and that has been the case with Fano.
In just a couple of clips that surfaced with him, he is seen holding his own against the Browns' best pass rushers in Jared Verse and Alex Wright. He was seen after practice the other day getting some extra work in with Verse, who has made it very clear that he is absolutely a team player and will be for this team.
Fano's introduction to the Browns' fanbase will come next Saturday when the Browns take on the Buffalo Bills in their preseason opener. This will be the first time that fans will get to see their future star and hopefully future Joe Thomas at the left tackle position.
It might not be clean right away for Fano as he is flipping from the right side of the line to the left, but he will take to it just fine.
The positive is that he now has a direct line to the best to ever do it in Thomas.
Thomas has always been open to mentoring the young tackles that come through Cleveland. He is always at the facility and is always open to teaching. Some are more open than others to accept his coaching, but none are more excited about it than Fano.
Thomas's week is going to be on a different trajectory than Fano's. Joe is heading an hour south to Canton to spend the next couple of days celebrating his Hall-of-Fame career before welcoming in five new members to his elusive club.
Fano, on the other hand, is continuing his first NFL Training Camp. The hope is that in 20 years time, Fano is on the same path as Thomas. There is a lot of work to do between now and then, but one thing is for certain: no one who has played in Cleveland over the past 10 years has been a bigger fan of Thomas than Spencer Fano.
He will take every opportunity presented to him by "The HOF," and hopefully it bears fruit for the Cleveland Browns.
