When the NFL announced the start date for Denver Broncos training camp earlier this month, the league also confirmed that the Broncos will not hold a joint training camp practice this summer. That news was previously announced by coach Sean Payton earlier this month.
“We’re not going to this year, and there’s a reason why: because of the postseason and we pushed things back here," coach Sean Payton said. "When you do have a joint practice, you miss maybe two days of installation. So this year we know we have the preseason games, but we’re not going to have a joint practice.”
Payton was later asked if he plans to play starters more in preseason games because the starters won't have film from a joint practice against a different team this summer. The coach brushed off that notion.
“I think you’ll see our starters play the same," Payton said. "The ‘no joint practice’ is really one — we’ll have the same practice with our defense rather than an opponent’s defense. To your point, up until training camp, you’ll see these guys with the 20 snap count early on, increase that the second preseason game and then maybe… But one of the reasons of not having the joint practice is to keep getting these ‘A’ schedule practice day schedules in that when you have one, then you have the day before where it’s prep for the team. You lose a couple of days, so that’s all. I think that there will be a lot of good field work to get those reps.”
Denver will play three preseason games in August before finalizing a 53-man roster. After that, the Broncos will open the regular season against the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football on Sept. 14.
