Brandon Sproat remains a member of the Milwaukee Brewers' rotation.

When he receives his next turn remains to be seen.

With an off day on April 9 leading into a three-game weekend series against the Washington Nationals at American Family Field, the team opted to skip the young right-hander this time through with an eye on jumping back in at a later date.

The Brewers continue to remain flexible with their starting pitching; left-hander Aaron Ashby was announced earlier Friday as the opener with right-hander Chad Patrick following. Kyle Harrison was moved up and into Sproat's spot and will start April 11 and Brandon Woodruff now starts the series finale April 12.

Sproat, meanwhile, will be available to provide length out of the bullpen until Milwaukee slots him back into the rotation. The team has another off day on April 13.

"He's still in our rotation. It's just the way things have worked out," said manager Pat Murphy. "We have an opener today. Sometimes this happens when you have the extra off days and things like that. Sproat will pitch and he'll be back in the rotation."

Sproat came over to the Brewers from the New York Mets along with infielder Jett Williams in exchange for Freddy Peralta, and the 25-year-old was impressive enough in four Cactus League appearances – 1-1 record, 3.46 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 15 strikeouts in 13 innings – to lock down a spot on his first opening-day roster.

His two appearances since have been rough, however, as he's been hit to the tune of a 14.85 ERA and WHIP of 2.55 while surrendering four home runs in only 6 ⅔ innings of work.

Murphy was asked if the change might benefit a younger pitcher like Sproat, who had just four major league starts under his belt coming into the season and might have been rattled a bit by his rough start to 2026.

"Guys that have never done it, it might spook them," he said. "This kid's dialed in. He's ready to go tonight. He knows if he's needed, he's ready to go. (Chad) Patrick knows; he had to learn that same way. It's kind of good to have that flexibility and be able to do both things.

"I'm pretty confident he's in a good spot. He's got to get better. He knows that. He's been out there a couple times and he knows, 'Hey, I've got to trust this and trust that and I've got to be able to execute.' He's learning on the job.

"When you have these young pitchers, that's what happens."

A few turns through the rotation now, the Brewers have received mixed results.

Jacob Misiorowski has averaged just over nine strikeouts over his first three starts but been inconsistent with his command. Patrick hasn't pitched deep into either of his starts but has been competitive with a 0.96 ERA. Brandon Woodruff has posted a 5.91 ERA through his first two.

Among the younger arms, Harrison has looked outstanding with a 2.61 ERA and WHIP of 0.97 while Shane Drohan struggled in his first major league start in Boston earlier in the week. Logan Henderson opened for Sproat in Kansas City last weekend and was limited to two innings.

"You guys know we're very inexperienced on the hill, trying to thread the needle," said Murphy. "So, these are the types of things you do.

"(Sproat) is still a starting pitcher for us."
