The Milwaukee Brewers have their shortstop of the future in Cooper Pratt. The 21-year-old has fit right in during his first big-league season. He has already graded out as one of the best defensive shortstops in the league since his debut, posting a fielding run value of three according to Baseball Savant.
His bat has also been productive. Across 136 at-bats, he has posted a .272 batting average, .352 on-base percentage, .720 OPS, two home runs and 75 RBIs. Pratt has been an immediate upgrade at shortstop and has played a role in helping the Brewers own the best record in the league.
Unfortunately, Pratt is dealing with his first injury at the big-league level. He is heading to get an MRI on his right hamstring after suffering the setback during Saturday’s matchup against the Minnesota Twins, according to Brewers reporter Dominic Cotroneo.
Pratt wanted to play through the issue, but the team is being cautious and decided to hold him out of Sunday’s lineup. David Hamilton took over as the starting shortstop in his place.
With Milwaukee’s infield depth already shaky as fellow infielder Joey Ortiz deals with a neck issue, the team moved quickly to add insurance. The Brewers announced Sunday they have signed infielder Ji-Hwan Bae to a minor league contract, with Bae immediately heading to Milwaukee to join the taxi squad, via Hunter Baumgardt of Fox Sports.
If either Ortiz or Pratt is forced to head to the injured list, the Brewers will have a familiar option ready to step in.
Bae brings four seasons of big-league experience with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2022 to 2025, giving Milwaukee a dependable fallback as they protect their roster depth heading into the final stretch of what has been a dominant season.
