The Milwaukee Brewers have a chance to make a big splash at the trade deadline, or they could sprinkle in a few minor trades that help their chances of making the World Series.
In what would be considered a relatively safe move, Milwaukee has a chance to bring back Freddy Peralta.
Peralta has been having a rough season with the New York Mets. It's his first season not pitching for the Brewers, and he's somehow gone from a World Series contender to a no-doubt seller at the trade deadline.
There are a lot of reasons why Peralta is struggling here in 2026, and the Mets are already over their trade from the offseason. There's a chance that in just a few months time, Peralta could be on his way back to Milwaukee, but it's not going to be cheap for the Brewers.
According to The Athletic's Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal, "The New York Mets are asking teams for a top-100 prospect and more in their early conversations with teams about Freddy Peralta."
So, not only do they want a top-100 prospect, but they also want more. That's a steep, steep price for a struggling big league pitcher, one who doesn't carry anywhere close to the same value as someone like Tarik Skubal.
Obviously though, the Mets know they have no choice but to trade him. This season is already a lost cause, so they might as well waive the white flag and concede before things somehow get even worse.
There's nothing wrong with shooting for the stars, but it'll be extremely interesting to see how long they're stuck with Peralta at that asking price. Manager Pat Murphy has gone on record to say any team would be lucky to have Peralta, but it would take a desperate buyer to fall for that trap, especially since Peralta is just a rental.
As much as Peralta gave this team and city, there's simply no way to justify a top-100 prospect "and more."
Outside of the Brewers, Sammon and Rosenthal believe Peralta could end up with one of these four teams: Chicago Cubs, Tampa Bay Rays, Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies.
It would certainly sting to see Peralta come back to the National League Central, only for it to be with the Cubs. Obviously, he has experience with manager Craig Counsell, so it's not surprising in the slightest to see them interested. Remember, Chicago is currently in second place, trailing the Brewers by five and a half games.
