The college football world continues to monitor the Brendan Sorsby eligibility case closely. Most expect the NCAA to deny Sorsby eligibility for the 2026 season at Texas Tech after discovering he participated in a series of bets through sports gambling apps.

Those wagers reportedly ranged from general sports bets to bets involving his own team while he played at Indiana. As a result, Sorsby not only violated NCAA gambling rules but may have jeopardized millions of dollars in current and future earnings. Between gambling losses, NIL implications, and potential NFL earnings, the financial fallout could be significant.

While Sorsby could still declare for the 2026 Supplemental NFL Draft, there is no guarantee he would receive favorable draft consideration. He also risks losing the lucrative NIL package that reportedly helped bring him to Texas Tech. Altogether, the quarterback could be facing a staggering financial setback.

Gambling Losses

Reports indicate that Sorsby lost approximately $90,000 through sports betting during his college career. The wagers consisted of thousands of smaller bets that gradually added up.

For most people, $90,000 is a substantial amount of money. However, compared to the NIL and NFL earnings potentially at stake, those gambling losses may represent only a fraction of the overall financial damage.

Still, when viewed alongside the millions of dollars in earnings he may have jeopardized, the losses become even more costly.

NIL Losses

Sorsby reportedly transferred to Texas Tech on a lucrative NIL package worth approximately $5 million. Other programs, including LSU, were reportedly willing to offer deals in the $3.5 million range.

Now, that money could be in jeopardy.

If Sorsby becomes ineligible to play because of his own actions, Texas Tech could potentially withhold future payments or seek to recover portions of the agreement, depending on the contract’s terms.

As a result, Sorsby could lose access to the entire $5 million package. Additionally, reports have suggested he may owe Cincinnati approximately $1 million for an alleged breach of contract, bringing the potential NIL-related financial impact to roughly $6 million.

NFL Draft Earnings Impact

Unlike gambling and NIL losses, there is no exact figure for the NFL earnings Sorsby may have cost himself.

If his football career were to end because of this situation, the long-term losses could potentially reach tens of millions of dollars. For simplicity, however, it’s worth examining where he may have been selected had he entered the 2026 NFL Draft.

Had Sorsby continued developing and improved his draft stock, he may have positioned himself anywhere from the middle of the first round to the middle of the third round.

The No. 16 overall pick typically receives a rookie contract worth roughly $22 million under the NFL’s rookie wage scale. Meanwhile, the No. 80 overall pick generally receives a contract worth approximately $7 million.

The Supplemental NFL Draft presents a much different scenario.

Given the circumstances surrounding his gambling violations, NFL teams would likely approach Sorsby with extreme caution. Even if selected, he may struggle to rise above Day 3 draft consideration. For the sake of projection, assume he falls to the sixth round at approximately No. 182 overall.

That draft slot carries a contract value of roughly $4.5 million.

There is also a realistic possibility that Sorsby goes undrafted entirely. In that scenario, he would likely receive a contract near the league minimum, worth roughly $2.6 million over three years with only a modest signing bonus.

Based on those estimates, Sorsby may have cost himself anywhere from $4.4 million to $19.4 million in rookie-contract earnings alone compared to where he might have been drafted under more favorable circumstances.

Final Tally

From a financial perspective, the consequences of Sorsby’s decisions could be enormous.

He appeared to have a promising football future ahead of him. Now, that future remains uncertain as he awaits a ruling on his eligibility and attempts to rebuild trust with football programs and professional evaluators.

If Sorsby eventually reaches the NFL, he may still recover some of these losses over time. However, doing so will require years of strong performance and a willingness to overcome the reputational damage associated with the gambling violations.

Based on current estimates, the potential financial losses break down as follows:

Gambling Losses: $90,000
NIL Losses: Approximately $6 million
NFL Draft Earnings Impact: Approximately $4.4 million to $19.4 million

Estimated Total Losses: $10.49 million to $25.49 million

It is important to note that these figures are only estimates. The final total could ultimately be lower or significantly higher depending on future NCAA rulings, NIL contract outcomes, and Sorsby’s professional football prospects.

One thing is clear: Sorsby’s decision to engage in sports gambling may end up costing him far more than he ever could have won through betting.
