Werder Bremen have signed Daniel Thioune as their new coach, the Bundesliga club said in a statement on Wednesday.

He replaces Horst Steffen, who was dismissed on Sunday in the wake of 10 games without victory.

The club didn't disclose contract details, such as the length of the deal.

Thioune most recently coached second-division side Fortuna Dusseldorf and hasn't worked in the Bundesliga so far. He will make his debut in the top German tier against Freiburg on Saturday.

"Our meetings with Daniel all went very well. His understanding of football, along with his character and his approach to our current sporting situation were all key factors in our decision. We are convinced that we will manage to turn things around with him in charge," head of professional football Clemens Fritz said.

Thioune added: "I'm very much looking forward to working with the team and I'm convinced that we will manage to be successful together, in order to achieve the goals that the club have set."

Bremen are 15th in the league standings, just above the relegation zone.
