Breaking down Hansi Flick’s head-to-head record vs Diego Simeone

The upcoming clash between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid once again brings focus to the growing tactical rivalry between Hansi Flick and Diego Simeone.

Simeone is the manager Flick has faced more than any other in his career, with their head-to-head battles already reaching nine encounters.

That number is set to increase rapidly, as both sides are scheduled to meet multiple times in a short span, including their Champions League quarter-final tie.

Flick’s record vs Simeone

So far, Flick has had the upper hand in this managerial duel.

Across their nine meetings, the German coach has recorded five wins, two draws, and two defeats, averaging an impressive 1.89 points per game.

To put it in perspective, their rivalry dates back to Flick’s time at Bayern Munich, when his side delivered a dominant 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League group stage during the 2020–21 season.

The reverse fixture in Madrid, however, proved more competitive, ending in a 1-1 draw.

The tactical battle continued when Flick took charge of Barcelona.

Since then, meetings between the two have remained intense and unpredictable, with Barcelona securing two wins, alongside one draw and one defeat in their encounters last season.

This season has already delivered dramatic results between the sides.

Barcelona’s first major fixture following their return to the Spotify Camp Nou saw them secure a convincing 3-1 win after initially falling behind.

It was a performance that showed Flick’s ability to make in-game adjustments against Simeone’s setup.

However, Atletico responded strongly in the Copa del Rey, producing a commanding 4-0 victory in the semi-final first leg.

Barcelona, in turn, answered with authority, registering a 3-0 win in the return leg to keep the rivalry finely balanced, although they were eliminated from the competition.

Now, with multiple high-stakes encounters lined up, Flick vs Simeone is becoming one of the most compelling managerial battles in European football.
