The Atlanta Braves could have used another frontline starter to pair with Chris Sale for the postseason.
They failed to land one at the trade deadline.
Instead, they acquired right-hander Tyler Mahle from the San Francisco Giants, who had a 5.13 ERA in 18 starts with the NL West club but finished last season strong with the Texas Rangers.
The Braves were one of the several teams that were interested in making a trade for back-to-back AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal, reports The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
However, trade negotiations between the Braves and Detroit Tigers did not advance that far.
Braves were not frontrunners for Skubal
"The Braves never got close to a deal for Skubal, even though they made virtually all of their young players available, including right-handers AJ Smith-Shawver and JR Ritchie," Rosenthal wrote.

Ultimately, Skubal landed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Braves must rely on Sale, Grant Holmes, Martin Perez, and Bryce Elder to do most of the rotation's heavy lifting.
Skubal is one of the top starters in baseball and could have helped the Braves leapfrog the Dodgers in the postseason.
Now, the Braves will likely have to face the tough lefty in the NLCS, if both clubs advance that far.
