Jul. 15—SIOUX FALLS — State champions were crowned at the USA Softball South Dakota youth fastpitch softball state tournament on July 11-13, with more than 120 teams participating in the event.
The tournament was played at diamonds at Harmodon Park and Sherman Park. Teams were guaranteed to play five games, and many of them involved double-elimination brackets to the championship.
In the 18B division, Yankton Fury White finished 6-0 in the tournament, including a 5-2 win over Black Hills Silencers in the championship round. The Venom squad, based in Mount Vernon and including team members from around Mitchell, finished fourth with a 4-3 weekend. Team members included Icis Muilenburg, Madalynn Lorang, Rylee Jennings, Jacey Schoenrock, Reese Amick, Kendra Endorf, Addison Feddersen, Kenna Magee, Makenna Termeer and Jersey Kampshoff. Coaches on the team included Travis Walz, Hailey Walz and Matt Engelland.
South Dakota Select, a team based in Mitchell, was 1-3 and finished seventh in the division as well.
Other state championship results included:
* 18A: South Dakota Renegades and Catalyst National tied for first place, splitting two matchups during the tournament. Catalyst won 11-8, and Renegades later won 13-5.
* 16A: South Dakota Impact and Catalyst National tied for first place, splitting two matchups during the tournament. Catalyst won 4-2, and Impact later won 9-8.
* 16B: Dakota Energy, of Sioux Falls, defeated Sioux Falls Flash 8-0.
* 14A: Next Play 605, of Sioux Falls, won the title in a winner-take-all 6-5 championship victory over Catalyst National.
* 14B: Brandon Valley Blitz Belben and Brandon Valley Christensen tied for first place.
* 12A: SD Players 12U Black defeated SD Players 11U Red 12-2 in the championship round for the division title.
* 12B: Yankton Fury Lancers and Brookings Outlaws tied for first place.
* 10A: SD Players 10U Black won the division title 3-1 over Yankton Fury Storm.
* 10B: Brandon Valley Blitz Halling defeated Baltic 11-1.
