Eddie Andelman, the longtime Boston sports radio host who died this week, was no stranger to Worcester.

His wife, the former Judith Rosenberg, grew up in the city and was part of a family that ran a market. Rosenburg's Poultry was located at 33 Harrison St. for a time.

Andelman often visited his Worcester in-laws, Louis and Ethel Slovin.

Andelman's sons, Michael, David and Daniel, bought Mendon Twin-Drive-in 2014. The brothers have long been associated with the Phantom Gourmet restaurant show.

"Some call him the godfather of sports radio," the brothers wrote on the Phantom Gourmet Facebook page Monday, the day their father died. "He certainly changed and elevated the sports radio game."

Eddie Andelman, who died at 89, was part of Boston radio airwaves for more than four decades. He is widely considered a pioneer of the sports radio format.

His early show, Sports Huddle, gave Boston's enthusiastic sports fans a place to rant, a place to share their takes on how players and teams should go about their business.

Andelman turned to radio after starting a career as a real estate developer.

"I had no idea of a show business career," Andelman told at Telegram & Gazette reporter during a 1991 remote broadcast from the Greendale Mall in Worcester. "To this day, I'm fascinated that people at homeand in their cars listen to me."
