July 1 is an annual reminder of terrible contracts.

The Washington Redskins/Commanders have had some terrible contracts that didn't work out for them; each team does. But July 1 reminds most of us of the infamous Bobby Bonilla deal. Younger readers may be asking, "Who is Bobby Bonilla?"

Bobby Bonilla was a Major League Baseball player from 1986-2001. In his early seasons, he and Barry Bonds formed one of the best young duos in MLB. In 1999, Bonilla was released by the New York Mets, but the Mets still owed Bonilla $5.9M. Keep in mind that is $5.9 million from 27 years ago. Mets owner Fred Wilpon didn't want to pay Bonilla the full $5.9M immediately, so he decided to pay it in annual installments.

Thinking they were going to get much, much more through their investments with Bernie Madoff, the Mets were stuck with a deal that has made them a laughingstock for decades now. Bonilla received $ 1,193,248.20 as a deferred payment in 2011. The problem for the Mets is the deferred payments have continued from 2011 to 2035. When all is said and done, Bonilla will receive $29,831,205 from the Mets. Why didn't they just go ahead and pay the $5.9M?

Former Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder offered some of the worst contracts imaginable in his era. In 1999, the Redskins won the NFC East, finishing 10-6. QB Brad Johnson had passed for 4,000 yards, but no, Snyder wanted Jeff George and signed him to a 4-year $18M deal. The deal alienated HC Norv Turner and Johnson. George, meanwhile, was rarely effective and was released by the next HC, Mary Schottenheimer, in early 2001.

In 2006, Adam Archuleta was made the highest-paid safety in NFL history. How does that happen? Archuleta had not established himself as one of the better NFL safeties, yet Snyder agreed to a six-year $30M contract with who? The Redskins got only seven games out of Archuleta, and he was in Chicago the next season.

Snyder also foolishly agreed to a contract with a 32-year-old cornerback, starting a downward decline. Snyder agreed to pay Deion Sanders $56M over the next seven years. The contract was as bad as that suit Sanders showed up in for his press conference. Sanders provided the Redskins with only one season. Making matters worse was the dead cap money Sanders cost them in future seasons.

But the worst Redskins contract was Albert Haynesworth's. Haynesworth would receive a 7-year $100 million deal, with $41M guaranteed. He showed up fat and out of shape, and his attitude was just as bad. He and his contract were both a disaster for Washington.

But the worst contract in NFL history is the Cleveland Browns signing Deshaun Watson for 5 years, $230 million. What in the world were the Browns smoking? Not only that, but the number of picks that Cleveland traded to Houston to acquire Watson was significant.

Hey Commanders fans, aren't you glad Josh Harris is now the owner and Adam Peters the general manager?
