The Toronto Blue Jays do not have to love where their season is headed. They just need to recognize that someone else’s season looks worse. That team is the New York Mets. The Mets are sliding, the MLB trade deadline is getting closer, and their roster suddenly looks more useful to contenders than it does to themselves. That is exactly the kind of situation Toronto should try to exploit, especially if the Blue Jays still believe there is enough time to push back into the playoff race.

Freddy Peralta is the name that should interest them most

Peralta has not had a perfect season, but deadline buyers rarely get perfect options. They get pitchers with upside, track record, and enough swing-and-miss to dream of October. Peralta checks those boxes, and his expiring contract makes him a cleaner short-term target than a pitcher tied to a massive long-term commitment.

The Blue Jays should not pretend they are one move away from being fixed. They are not. But adding Peralta would at least give the rotation a badly needed jolt without forcing the front office into a franchise-altering trade. It would also be the kind of move that changes the tone.

Toronto has spent too much of the season looking like a team waiting for things to turn around. Taking advantage of the Mets’ disaster would be a more aggressive message: the Blue Jays are not ready to disappear.

There is risk, of course. Trading prospects for a rental pitcher only makes sense if Toronto believes the standings are still reachable. If the front office thinks this season is slipping away, then buying would be reckless. But if the Blue Jays are going to buy, this is the type of target that makes sense. The Mets may be stuck. Toronto should see if that creates an opening.
