The speculation surrounding Jalen Duren’s future with the Detroit Pistons has taken another intriguing turn.

After reports surfaced that Duren plans to meet with the Sacramento Kings as free agency opens, a new report from The Athletic’s Sam Amick suggests the Kings may be preparing a blockbuster proposal that includes three-time NBA All-Star Domantas Sabonis heading to Detroit in a sign and trade.

While no deal is imminent and discussions remain in the early stages, the possibility of Sabonis becoming part of the framework immediately raises the stakes for both franchises.

Kings Reportedly Eyeing Jalen Duren

According to Amick, Sacramento remains serious about acquiring Duren after the 22 year old center reportedly expressed disappointment with Detroit’s initial contract offer.

League sources told The Athletic that the Kings are scheduled to meet with Duren at the start of free agency and intend to present the Pistons with a sign and trade proposal centered around Sabonis.

Amick also noted that Detroit has continued signaling a strong desire to keep Duren, making it far from certain that the Pistons would entertain such an offer.

Why Sabonis Would Be an Interesting Fit

If the Kings formally present the proposal, Detroit would have plenty to consider.

Sabonis is one of the NBA’s premier offensive centers and a three time All Star known for his elite passing, rebounding, and interior scoring. He has consistently been among the league leaders in rebounds and double doubles while serving as the offensive hub of Sacramento’s attack.

For a Pistons team looking to lessen the offensive burden on Cade Cunningham, Sabonis could immediately provide another high level playmaker capable of facilitating the offense from the post and creating opportunities for teammates.

Unlike Duren, who is still developing into an All NBA caliber player, Sabonis is already an established veteran with extensive playoff experience.

Would Detroit Actually Consider It?

The biggest question is whether Detroit has any interest in moving one of the league’s brightest young centers.

Duren earned Third Team All NBA honors after averaging 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds during the regular season, establishing himself as a foundational piece of the franchise. At just 22 years old, many around the league still believe his best basketball is ahead of him.

The Pistons have repeatedly emphasized building a sustainable contender around Cunningham, and moving a young All NBA player would represent a dramatic shift in that plan.

At the same time, Sabonis is the type of proven star who could help Detroit compete immediately, making this the kind of proposal the front office would at least need to evaluate.

The Bottom Line

For now, this remains only a reported possibility, not an agreement.

However, the fact that Sacramento is reportedly willing to discuss including Domantas Sabonis illustrates just how highly the Kings value Jalen Duren. Whether Detroit ultimately decides to keep its young star or seriously considers a blockbuster deal could become one of the defining storylines of the NBA offseason.
