A world champion will lead the Bishop McCort Catholic High School’s girls wrestling program.
Kaura Coles was named Friday as the Crimson Crushers’ coach.
“We want every girl who walks into our room to discover that she is capable of more than she has ever imagined,” Coles said.
Coles became Canada’s first world champion in 2024 at the Under-17 level. She earned gold at the 2024 Pan-American Championships as a 53-kilogram wrestler.
Coles was a member of the 2026 senior world team.
Bishop McCort will have between six and 10 female wrestlers this season, led by rising senior Emma Bacon, a three-time Fargo freestyle national champion.
Coles speaks four languages fluently. She will challenge her wrestlers to grow in confidence, resilience, discipline, leadership, courage, accountability, perseverance, respect and self-belief.
She was chosen because of her character, humility, servant leadership, work ethic, commitment to academics and ability to inspire and develop young women.
At Bishop McCort, athletics are one expression of a larger mission – to develop young people of character who are prepared to lead in life. When young girls see a woman who has reached the highest levels of her sport standing in front of them each day, possibility becomes personal.
The next generation of Bishop McCort female athletes will now have the opportunity to be mentored by one of the world’s best – someone who demonstrates through her own life what discipline, perseverance, humility and excellence can achieve. It is an investment in the confidence, leadership and future of young women.
Coles’ appointment accompanies what is one of the best boys wrestling programs in the country at Bishop McCort. The Crimson Crushers finished second at the PIAA Class 2A duals each of the past three seasons. The Crimson Crushers will move up to the Class 3A level for the next two seasons.
Former Bishop McCort assistant coach Nestor Varona was hired to lead the Frostburg State University’s women’s team.
