News broke on Monday that the University of North Carolina football team’s general manager, Michael Lombardi, a longtime collaborator with head coach Bill Belichick, has been placed on administrative leave.

“The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has placed Michael Lombardi, general manager for the Carolina football program, on paid administrative leave, effective immediately,” UNC said via statement. “As is standard procedure with personnel matters, leadership, staff, and student-athletes are prohibited from addressing this topic further, and has no reflection on the merits.”

ESPN’s Pete Thamel followed up with a report that the decision to place Lombardi, who is in the second year of a three-year deal that pays a base rate of $1.5 million per year, on leave stemmed from a complaint filed by a former UNC front office employee.

Later on Monday afternoon, investigative sports journalist Pablo Torre broke the news that the entire football program had been placed under investigation by the College Sports Commission.

“BREAKING: In addition to the Mike Lombardi HR matter, the University of North Carolina football team is also being investigated by the College Sports Commission — the entity which handles compliance and enforcement of NCAA and NIL rules,” Torre posted on X.
