Big Red, Fellow Mascots, Entertain at Hospital
Children at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Banner Medical Center received a special treat on Friday when they were visited by Cardinals team mascot Big Red and 15 of his fellow NFL mascots - Swoop (Philadelphia Eagles), Captain Fear (Tampa Bay Bucs), Toro (Houston Texans), Jaxson De Ville (Jacksonville Jaguars), Sourdough Sam (San Francisco 49ers), Miles (Denver Broncos), Freddie Falcon (Atlanta Falcons), TD (Miami Dolphins), Poe (Baltimore Ravens), Pat Patriot (New England Patriots), Staley (Chicago Bears), Rowdy (Dallas Cowboys), Sir Purr (Carolina Panthers), Roary (Detroit Lions), and T-Rac (Tennessee Titans).
After an hour of lifting spirits at the hospital, the group took a long lunch hour before resuming their silly antics for the guests at Springhill Suites. During a two-hour autograph session, the mascots mostly posed for pictures and stirred up fun in the parking lot, lobby and pool of the hotel.
“The mascots earned a lot of smiles today and that’s what their job is,” said Scott Gavin, who coordinates the appearances for Big Red. “Big Red usually gets a very warm reception when he’s by himself, but kids see all of these NFL mascots all at once and it’s like being at Disneyland.”
The mascots were in town for the 2005 NFL Mascot Convention hosted by the Cardinals at the team’s south Tempe training facility. Before entertaining the local community on Friday, the mascots spent Wednesday and Thursday meeting with vendors, going over its best practices, and discussing industry trends and innovations as they prepare for the upcoming season.
