They can’t all be winners, I suppose?

We might get some entertaining games this week, and maybe some thrilling endings, but at a glance, there’s not a metric ton of highlights in this week’s Big East basketball slate. Heck, as you scroll down, you’ll realize I highlighted a team that is 1-3 and a team that is 0-4, mostly just because it’s going to be a measuring stick as to exactly how far said 0-4 team can slide.

It would probably help if each side of the league had someone other than Connecticut ranked, but that’s not a problem that we can solve right now. Heck, the right combination of results this week might even make that result further off than it is right now. It’ll make sense as we go along.

Let’s get to it, shall we?

Wednesday, January 7: Xavier Musketeers at Marquette Golden Eagles (6pm Central, FS1) — Nigel James and the Golden Eagles are the last winless team in league play. KenPom.com has them favored by two in this game. Marquette is not favored in a game again until March 1st. As a result, this is a bellwether on the entire rest of the season for MU, and at 1-3, things aren’t exactly hot shakes for the Musketeers right now, either.

Wednesday, January 7: #4 Connecticut Huskies at Providence Friars (6pm Central, Peacock) — One week ago, Friars fans were staring at the schedule saying “oh, shoot, are we about to be 0-4 after not getting it done against Butler or Seton Hall?” On Saturday, four minutes into PC’s first game since before Christmas, the Friars were down 13-0 at Madison Square Garden. And yet, they won the game. Their reward? A home game against UConn. Maybe it doesn’t go their way, but the AMP is a hard place to play.

Wednesday, January 7: Creighton Bluejays at RV Villanova Wildcats (6:30pm Central, Peacock) — We were two tieups and a putback and-1 away from this being a battle of unbeatens in conference play. Instead, Creighton lost to Seton Hall at The Rock on Sunday, so we have to settle for the 3-1 Jays and the 3-0 Cats, who are on a five game winning streak right now.

Thursday, January 8: Creighton Bluejays at Marquette Golden Eagles (7pm Central, truTV) — I’ll be honest here, Big East women’s basketball is kind of low on highlights this week. This one fits though, as Marquette is aiming at following up their big win over Villanova on Sunday, and Creighton is looking to follow up a home win over Butler with their second top Torvik top 100 win of the season.

Saturday, January 10: St. John’s Red Storm at Creighton Bluejays (1pm Central, FS1) — Hey, congrats to Greg McDermott’s Bluejays, your reward for going to The Finn after losing a heartbreaker at Seton Hall is this home game against a St. John’s team that is either A) ornery about their loss to Providence, even after a Tuesday game at Butler, 2) in an even worse mood after losing at Butler, or D) on the verge of self-destruction as this season continues to go off the rails. Could be anything, and that’s the situation possibly facing Josh Dix & Friends to avoid a three game losing streak.

Sunday, January 11: #1 Connecticut Huskies at Creighton Bluejays (1pm Central, truTV) — Look, I’m not here to tell you that Creighton stands a gigantic chance against Sarah Strong’s crew here, but in theory, DJ Sokol Arena should be one of the tougher arenas in the league for UConn to visit.

Saturday, January 11: RV Seton Hall Pirates at Georgetown Hoyas (5pm Central, FS1) — Seton Hall struggling with Marquette and catching a massive break against Creighton probably hindered them from getting into the AP top 25 right now. This is their only game of the week, so they need to do very bad things to Ed Cooley’s Hoyas to get back on track.
