Bethune-Cookman’s March Madness dreams will have to wait another year.
The SWAC’s regular-season champion and No. 1 seed in the league tournament fell to No. 8 Prairie View A&M 71-67 in the quarterfinals on March 11 at Gateway Center Arena in College Park, Georgia.
The Wildcats (17-15) led by four points with three minutes remaining and two points with just over a minute and a half left.
But the Panthers (16-17) held B-CU without a field goal for the final three minutes. They rallied for four points in the last 44 seconds to complete the upset.
Neither team led by more than seven points during the game. The score was tied 32-32 at halftime.
Dontae Horne dropped a game-high 30 points for Prairie View A&M. Cory Wells added 22 points and 10 rebounds. The duo combined to hit seven of their 10 3-point attempts, as the Panthers converted eight of 14 (57%) overall.
Conversely, Bethune-Cookman made only two of its 11 tries from beyond the arc. Jakobi Heady paced the squad with 21 points.
Prairie View A&M advanced to the SWAC semifinals. It will take on the winner of the Texas Southern-Alabama A&M quarterfinal.
The Wildcats will wait for a potential invitation to one of the secondary postseason tournaments.
