Jun. 17—LIMA, Peru — Bennett Berge has added another piece of hardware to his trophy case.
The 2021 Kasson-Mantorville High School graduate did it in dominating fashion, cruising to the 86 kg gold medal at the U-23 Pan-American Championships on June 11 in Lima, Peru.
Berge, who will wrestle his final upcoming collegiate season at Oklahoma State after four years at South Dakota State University, reeled off four shutout technical falls, plus a pin, to finish the day 5-0. He downed two-time age-group Pan American medalist Alek Ortiz Roman of Puerto Rico in the gold medal match, 10-0.
The two-time U20 World medalist did not surrender a single point to his opponents and was the recipient of the tournament's Golden Boot, given to the tournament's most outstanding wrestler. It comes less than two weeks after Berge collected seven victories to capture the 86 kg U-23 national title in Geneva, Ohio.
Overall, Berge was one of nine American champions in Peru as the U.S. won the team title with 245 points, ahead of Puerto Rico (180) and Mexico (100).
