The Cincinnati Bengals trading for Dexter Lawrence sort of kept the floodgates open for suggestions that the team should make other big splash moves around Joe Burrow.
One of those suggestions that always comes up?
Trading for Maxx Crosby.
And really, don’t laugh: It was a little easy to overlook or forget in the moment, but a report said the Bengals were exploring a Maxx Crosby trade before going to free agency and signing Boye Mafe.
So, the suggestions will keep coming. The latest is from former NFL pro Willie Colon on “First Things First” this week:
“I think if you’re the Cowboys, the Bills, the Bears, the Bengals, you’re offering two first round picks in an opportunity to go get Maxx Crosby,” Colon said. “He’s the finished product you want if you feel like you’re a championship contender, so go get him.”
The price tag on Crosby would likely be too much for the Bengals now, as the failed Baltimore trade checked in at two first-round picks, never mind his big contract.
Still, it’s interesting to think about how the Shemar Stewart injury might have impacted things. They still have Mafe, Myles Murphy and rookie Cashius Howell on the edge, but they need Stewart to develop. If he had suffered a more severe injury, the Bengals might’ve looked for outside help.
The time for the Bengals to trade for Crosby passed. But if nothing else, at least fans can say it was realistic, based on the reporting at the time and the aggressiveness to go get Lawrence.
