To say the Cincinnati Bengals shocked some onlookers this offseason would be an understatement.
In an aggressive push to address problems, the Bengals spent big cash on safety Bryan Cook and edge rusher Boye Mafe, then went big with the Dexter Lawrence trade.
That trio of moves added up to a generational leaving of a comfort zone by the Bengals.
And it’s still earning them plenty of praise.
Matt Okada of NFL.com is one after crowning the Bengals as one of just a handful of teams that properly attacked glaring weaknesses.
“To address the issue, Cincy signed the highest-ranked free-agent safety in Gregg Rosenthal's Top 101, Bryan Cook, as well as Kyle Dugger,” Okada wrote. “Cook was analytically elite last season, so the upgrade cannot be overstated. The Bengals also spent a third-round pick on cornerback Tacario Davis, who has the size (at nearly 6-foot-4) to play some snaps at safety and help cover tight ends.”
Some of this is the Bengals still paying a harsh tax for the Jesse Bates mistake years ago.
But hey, the Bengals are trying something. The issue is obvious. So is the sense of urgency around Joe Burrow.
For that, the Bengals deserve praise. Maybe it doesn't work. Maybe the weaknesses don’t even become strengths. But the fact the Bengals bucked history and got this aggressive will always be praiseworthy.
