The Cincinnati Bengals hope for big things from running back Chase Brown next season.
What isn’t clear, though, is whether the Bengals will hit Brown with a contract extension this summer, or let him play out the final year of his rookie deal and see how things look roughly one year from now.
Regardless, the national lens doesn’t think much of Brown still. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler just talked with NFL executives, coaches and other personnel to rank the top running backs going into next season. Brown falls outside of the top 10 and into the “also receiving votes” slot.
Fair enough. Brown isn’t up there with Christian McCaffrey and Bijan Robinson by any means.
What Brown is, though, is a big breakout candidate. He very quietly rushed for 1,019 yards and six scores on a 4.4 average last year, while also catching 69 of his 88 targets for 437 yards and five more scores over 17 games.
That production came while the offense juggled multiple quarterbacks in what was ultimately a lost season. His offense was pretty consistently hung out to dry by a bad defense, too.
Right now, Spotrac has Brown’s market value at a four-year contract worth $52 million, with an average annual salary of $13 million. That seems a little out of band, but the projected production to create those numbers speaks to how much more room he has to ascend as a player, especially if the team around him is as improved as the Bengals hope to be next year.
