The Chicago Bears are getting ready to depart for the West Coast to take on the San Francisco 49ers in a pivotal NFC showdown, but they could be without one of their key offensive linemen.
On Saturday, the team announced they have added right tackle Darnell Wright to the injury report with an illness, and he will not travel with the team. Wright is officially questionable. In addition, the Bears activated offensive lineman Luke Newman off injured reserve, waived defensive lineman Jonathan Ford, and elevated defensive back Dallis Flowers and wide receiver JP Richardson from the practice squad.
The most noteworthy development, however, is Wright. The third-year tackle has played at a Pro Bowl level this season, allowing just 18 pressures and two sacks all season. His development has been a significant reason for quarterback Caleb Williams' and the offense's success. Wright is the sixth player to miss time with an illness that has been sweeping through Halas Hall over the last couple of weeks, according to Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times.
The Bears are officially listing Wright as questionable for Sunday night's game, meaning there is still a chance he can travel separately and suit up if need be. Given the fact the Bears and 49ers don't play until Sunday evening, he theoretically could leave tomorrow and still make the game with plenty of time to spare if he's feeling better.
If Wright is unable to go, the Bears would turn to Theo Benedet to fill his place. Chicago could opt to slot in Benedet at right tackle and leave rookie Ozzy Trapilo on the left side, or flip the players given they have experience on both sides. More information will be available tomorrow as to the availability of Wright.
