Bears predicted to not trade Cole Kmet unless one thing is included in a deal originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Chicago Bears made some big changes to their roster this offseason, with both starting safeties and a starting linebacker leaving in free agency. They added Dillon Thieneman, Coby Bryant, and Devin Bush on defense to fill those holes.

On offense, the Bears traded DJ Moore to the Buffalo Bills and drafted tight end Sam Roush, which has made the Cole Kmet trade question a lot more intriguing.

However, ESPN's Courtney Cronin is predicting that the Bears will not accept any Kmet trade offer unless one thing is included: a player at a position of need.

Bears predicted not to trade Cole Kmet unless they get back a player

"Barring a package that would include a position of need in return -- such as a pass rusher -- it doesn't benefit the Bears' offense to move Kmet before the 2026 season," Cronin writes.

While it might seem tempting to trade Kmet for a decent return in a trade, the draft picks won't help the Bears compete in 2026.

Even though Roush is a nice addition on Day 2 of the NFL Draft, he's a blocking tight end and better suited as the team's third TE than the No. 2 option behind Colston Loveland.

Kmet will be a free agent after his contract expires in 2027, and there is a chance the Bears trade him to guarantee they get something back for the veteran tight end.

But, for a contending Bears team in 2026, it doesn't make sense to trade him unless they are getting a player who could help them right away in 2026.

If a team like the Carolina Panthers were to offer Xavier Legette and a mid-round pick, or a team were to offer an edge rusher and a draft pick to the Bears for Kmet, then maybe Ryan Poles would be open to a deal.

But, as things currently stand, the Bears are not likely to trade Kmet this offseason, unless they get back a player and picks in an offer that most teams likely wouldn't make for Kmet.
