Barcelona: open war between Xavi and Laporta
The former idol and coach Xavi did not hesitate to openly criticize Joan Laporta, president of FC Barcelona, claiming he was betrayed during his dismissal in 2024.
The Xavi saga at Barcelona continues to stir up controversy. The former coach, sacked in May 2024 despite his triumphant return to the club, did not hold back in an interview with La Vanguardia:
I came back to Barça thanks to Laporta, but he betrayed me. He fired me under the influence of Alejandro Echevarría, someone I consider to be above the president.
Xavi points the finger at members of Laporta's inner circle, accusing them of supporting a decision he deems unfair, and speaks of his deep disappointment with his former friend. For his part, Joan Laporta defends himself by highlighting sporting logic:
With Xavi, we would have continued to lose. Since he left, the same players are winning under Flick. It is the president's job to make tough decisions.
Laporta also accuses political manipulation behind Xavi's criticism, naming Víctor Font as the driving force behind this campaign: "He's trying to tarnish the electoral process, but I won't let myself be influenced." Finally, the president clarified the situation around Lionel Messi's failed return in 2023:
Messi chose to join Inter Miami to avoid the pressure. Xavi was never an obstacle to his return.
Between grudges, internal politics, and sporting decisions, the clash between Xavi and Laporta highlights the ongoing tensions within Barça. Will this have repercussions on the club's presidential elections? Stay tuned!
