Bam Adebayo Breaks Silence on LeBron James Passing on Heat, Reveals Text Message to 4-Time MVP

The Miami Heat came close to landing one of the biggest names in NBA history this offseason. They were the frontrunners in the LeBron James sweepstakes before the four-time MVP ultimately chose to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers.

While some expected Miami’s players to be disappointed, Heat captain Bam Adebayo had a different reaction, revealing the message he sent James after his close friend made his decision.

James has officially joined Philadelphia in free agency, giving the franchise another star alongside Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Jaylen Brown. The move immediately reshaped the Eastern Conference, with the 76ers becoming one of the favorites to compete for the 2027 NBA championship.

Miami was among the teams linked to James throughout his free agency. The Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Golden State Warriors were all considered potential destinations before the 22-time All-Star instead chose Philadelphia.

For Adebayo, however, James’ decision was never something he took personally.

According to The Miami Herald’s Anthony Chiang, the Heat star made it clear that he respects his friend’s choice.

“There ain’t no disappointment,” Adebayo said. “To me, you should always be happy for a person and their decision. He made a decision where he feels like it’s his best situation to win. And I feel like I’m a good friend of LeBron’s.”

The relationship between the two stars has grown stronger over the past few years. Adebayo and James were teammates on Team USA during the 2024 Paris Olympics, where they helped the United States capture its 17th Olympic gold medal in men’s basketball. Their time together in Paris created a close friendship that has continued beyond international competition.

Although Adebayo is happy for James, he also made it clear that their friendship will be put on hold whenever they face each other during the 2026-27 season.

“Like I told him in the message, I’m going to bust his [expletive],” Adebayo said. “So, it’s going to be an exciting season. I’m excited for the East. We got a whole new turnaround in the East. So, it’s going to be exciting this year.”


Adebayo’s comments reflect just how much the balance of power has shifted across the conference this offseason.

Philadelphia’s addition of James gives it one of the league’s most talented starting lineups, while Miami enters the new season with a revamped roster built around Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo. The reigning NBA champion New York Knicks also remain among the East’s elite, setting up what could be one of the deepest title races in years.

For James, the decision to join the 76ers was another championship-driven move in a career filled with them. It’s not surprising, as at this stage of his career, every decision is viewed through the lens of competing for one more title.

That explains why Adebayo took James’ decision in stride. Rather than dwelling on what could have been, the Heat veteran understands why one of his closest friends chose what he believed to be his best opportunity to win a fifth ring.
