AUBURN — After nine seasons on Butch Thompson's staff, associate head coach Gabe Gross is stepping away from his duties with the Auburn baseball program.
The change was announced Monday, July 13, and included in it was that Gross would still be on the Plains. He'll be taking a new role in the athletics department, as "special assistant for athletics engagement." The program did not announce a hire for Gross' replacement.
“Gabe is an Auburn Man through and through, and he’s been a huge part of our program’s success over the last nine seasons,” Thompson said in a release. “More than just a coach on staff, Gabe has helped me grow my love for Auburn and is a lifelong friend."
A two-sport athlete at Auburn, Gross played for the Tigers from 1999 to 2001, eventually becoming a first-round draft pick by the Toronto Blue Jays organization. After his playing career, Gross re-enrolled at Auburn and spent the 2012 season as the program's student assistant.
Gross joined Thompson's staff six seasons later, coming on board as an assistant coach for the 2018 season. He was promoted to associate head coach ahead of the 2024 campaign.
During Gross' time on Thompson's staff, the program made six postseason appearances, including four super regionals and two College World Series. He mentored a slew of touted hitters in that span, including Ike Irish, Sonny DiChiara and several others.
"The current construct of collegiate athletics and college baseball demand your full attention, and my family does as well," Gross said in a release. "While it’s difficult to step away, I know it’s the right decision."
