As the NHL's Olympic break and roster freeze went into effect, an Artemi Panarin trade finally happened. With the New York Rangersstarting a rebuild, they had to trade their aging superstar in the final year of his contract.
But that meant they didn't have a ton of leverage, especially if Panarin didn't get an extension. That would mean whoever acquired him could have him as a rental. Which is my way of preparing you for what's next.
As usual, we're handing out trade grades for both sides. Let's break it down and tell you who won or lost this one:
Rangers get: F Liam Greentree, conditional third-round pick (per the New York Post's Mollie Walker: It becomes a second-rounder if they win a playoff round) and a 2028 conditional fourth (if they win two rounds).
Kings get: F Artemi Panarin
UPDATE: The Rangers will also retain half of Panarin's salary this year
Rangers fans were for sure hoping for more than a top prospect and a third-round pick. But maybe the market wasn't there for a player past his prime without a contract next year. That would explain the return here, but it's still not great.
Greentree is the Kings' top prospect, but he's not a top-10 overall type. The third-round pick? Meh. Not a great start to the big Rangers rebuild. GRADE: C
The Kings needed offense badly to keep pace in the crowded Western Conference and got a shot in the arm for next to nothing. Even if he's a rental, that's a price any team would pay. We'll see if this starts more moves for Los Angeles if they think they can compete in the Pacific, but you would have liked to see them get Panarin signed for a longer term, even if he's 34. GRADE: B+
UPDATE: So about that extension...
Stay tuned!

No contract extension yet but I'm told Kings and Panarin's camp are working on it...
