This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
EAST LANSING — Less than a week ago, after the Armada High School softball team won its first state quarterfinal in 16 years, coach Rob Girvin joked about the program's perennial underdog status.
"We're fine laying in the weeds," Girvin said following the Tigers' 11-4 victory over Frankenmuth on Tuesday, June 9. "Yeah, we don't need anybody to know about us. We're just little Armada. No one knows about us, right?"
Well, little Armada just did something big. So big, in fact, that everyone in Michigan will know its name.
From underdog, to unbelievable, to now unbeatable, the Tigers toppled Farmington Hills Mercy, 9-1, to win the MHSAA Division 2 state championship at Secchia Stadium on Saturday, June 13.
It's the first-ever softball state title for Armada (37-8), which was playing in the program's first state final since 1979.
Freshman pitcher Megan Cox was simply sensational, throwing 13 strikeouts to notch her eighth complete-game victory of the postseason.
For the third straight game, Armada took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. With two outs and Grace Girvin on third base, Taylor Capozzo drilled a two-run shot to left field.
In the top of the second, the Tigers struck again, this time on Charlotte Stang's sacrifice fly to shallow center field. That sent Courtney Krause home from third base.
An inning later, Grace Girvin gave Armada a 4-0 advantage on an RBI triple that dropped just shy of the warning track in right field. In the next at-bat, Lilyana Piconke drove Girvin in on an RBI groundout to first for a 5-0 edge.
Cox retired the first nine batters of the game, including the first four on strikeouts.
The fourth inning saw the Tigers go up 7-0 on Stang's two-run homer over the left-field wall.
Cox gave herself some insurance in the fifth inning when she hit an RBI triple to right-center field.
Mercy made some noise in the seventh inning and scored on a sacrifice fly to right field.
