The Arizona Diamondbacks' Randy Johnson threw a perfect game at 40.
The Diamondbacks' Merrill Kelly just threw his first complete game at age 37.
Now, Nolan Arenado, a veteran of the Colorado Rockies and the St. Louis Cardinals, is tearing it up for the Diamondbacks, hitting and defending at 35.
Describing his decision to sign with the Diamondbacks in the offseason as "a no-brainer," Arenado has provided a steady presence at third base as well as a power bat.
Arenado's on-base percentage has actually increased, from .339 for his career regular season to .351 for this season.
Entering into the four-game homestand against the Colorado Rockies that started Thursday, May 21, Arenado owns a .320 average for the past 30 games and for the season has notched 25 RBIs and seven home runs, including a grand slam in the first inning against the San Francisco Giants on Monday, May 18.
The Gold and Platinum Glover is getting his second wind, and he's glad to be doing it in Arizona.
As reported by The Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro, during a preseason news conference announcing his signing with the Diamondbacks back in January, Arenado said:
“When you have a new chapter in front of you, it kind of gives you a little bit of energy. And I feel that again. And I feel really anxious to get going in Arizona and get ready to play.”
Arenado was feeling optimistic about his offensive production as well as dealing with injuries, Piecoro reported.
And it looks like Arenado has made strides in both areas.
Arizona is where he needs and wants to be, and he hopes to help the Diamondbacks as long as he can.
“It’s close to home for me,” Arenado said. “I’m from Orange County (California), so it’s easy. I’ve got family in Arizona. I really like this team. They’re a good team. They play hard. They’re young, but I feel like I could really help this team win ballgames and contribute. And, obviously, being around good, young, hungry players, I think it just helps me stay young.”
