The Arizona Cardinals are in the final phase of their offseason program with OTAs. It is still voluntary, but it is the first offense vs. defense action. There is actual competition now, as they can go 7-on-7 or 11-on-11.
Some players enter this year with something extra to prove because of how the roster looks right now.
One such player is running back Trey Benson.
Benson finds himself deep on the depth chart. His second NFL season ended on injured reserve, unable to come back from a knee injury he suffered early. He was designated to return, returned to practice but then never was activated. Things didn't go as planned.
He entered last season expected to be a co-lead back with James Conner.
But that has changed. Conner returns. Tyler Allgeier was signed in free agency. Jeremiyah Love was drafted third overall. He is now, at best, fourth in the running back room.
No. 4 in the running back room must be a special teams contributor, either as a returner or in other roles. Benson has exactly zero special teams snaps in his NFL career.
He is a leading candidate to be on the trading block, although it is uncertain how much interest he would garner.
Whether he is traded or not, he must establish his health and his playmaking skills or he will be out of a job this year.
