Leaders across New Jersey and New York have long been touting the return of the World Cup to the United States as a way to boost interest in the sport locally.
But as the tournament is finally here, another sports team is unintentionally stealing its thunder.
The New York Knicks are now one win away from their first NBA championship since 1973 after a miraculous comeback victory over the San Antonio Spurs June 10 put them up 3-1 in the series. The team has been on a tear throughout this year's playoffs, with the June 8 Spurs win snapping the Knicks' 13-game winning streak dating back to late April.
The run has captivated New York City and much of New Jersey, which no longer has an NBA team after the Nets moved from the Meadowlands to Brooklyn in 2012. Now, the Knicks have a chance to win the championship June 13 — the same night of the first match at the temporarily renamed New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford.
Soccer is the most popular sport in the world, and it has plenty of diehard fans in the local area. But the sudden success of a long-suffering team has understandably shifted the focus of many of the region's general sports fans, and residents as a whole.
So, with the World Cup officially underway June 11 and the U.S. team kicking off its tournament a day later, we want to hear from readers. Which event do you care more about?
