Chris Paul — what are the Washington Commanders going to do with him?

Paul was suddenly inserted into the starting lineup at left guard this past season, replacing Brandon Coleman, whom the Commanders made a healthy inactive for five consecutive weeks. It was a surprise to everyone outside the walls of the Ashburn facilities.

The 2025 season now concluded, Paul becomes a free agent. So, was the starting of Paul at left guard about Paul doing so well in practice? Or might it have been more about the Commanders' disappointment in Coleman? Remember, he was healthy and made inactive for five weeks.

The #Commanders made a surprise when they benched LG Brandon Coleman for Chris Paul after just 2 games. But 3 games later, Paul has played well and justified the move. I broke down his performances so far: https://t.co/rJKQirh0ELpic.twitter.com/D29anAClGe

Paul was a round seven (230 overall) selection in the 2022 draft by the Commanders out of Tulsa. He had only started eight games in his first three seasons, including zero in 2024. Suddenly, he was inserted into the starting lineup for Week 3, and he started all of his last 15 games this past 2025 season.

If they really like Paul, the Commanders have yet to resign the left guard to a new contract. Now, before actually placing blame on the Commanders, it could very well be that they might have already offered Paul a sizeable pay increase. Perhaps Paul has rejected a new contract offer by Washington? The Commanders would really be wise to put an offer on the table, because if Paul does hit free agency, it is very conceivable, he could get a higher offer and simply follow the money and leave Washington.

The official beginning of the new league year is March 11, which means teams, players and agents can work out their deals "unofficially" beginning March 9. It will be here before you know it...
