The Cincinnati Reds will have to do it the hard way, but they expect to get their final thorny contract issues with players concluded just ahead of the first workouts for pitchers and catchers.
Catcher Tyler Stephenson and reliever Graham Ashcraft were the lone players among a long list of arbitration-eligible Reds who didn’t agree to terms before last month’s filing deadline. And team president Nick Krall said he expects to go to hearings with both in the coming days.
“We’ve had some discussions, but we are prepared to go to a case,” Krall said, referring to talks on possible multiyear agreements.

Ashcraft, who made the transition from starter to leverage reliever last season, has his hearing scheduled for Thursday (Feb. 5). He filed a salary demand of $1.75 million, compared to the club’s $1.25 million filing.
Stephenson, who has been among the best offensive catchers in the game when healthy in recent years, is scheduled for Monday (Feb. 9). He filed at $6.8 million (Reds: $6.55 million).
Pitchers and catchers hold first official spring workouts the day after Stephenson’s hearing.
In a hearing, three-member arbitration panels hear arguments from both sides then vote on which of the two salary figures to award the player.
