The Los Angeles Angels were hoping to get their third straight when against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but the first series in this one their road trip got off to a tough start as starter Sam Aldegheri was hit hard in this one and the Halos lost the rubber game, 8-1.
It wasn’t a competitive outing for Aldegheri or the Angels. The Angels did score first with a run in the first courtesy of a Zach Neto homer off Dbacks starter Eduardo Rodriguez, but the wheels came off early for Aldegheri, as he gave up five runs in the second and another in the third to quickly put this one out of reach.
The key hits for the Diamondbacks included a triple by Tommy Troy to score Ildemaro Vargas, followed later in the inning by a grand slam from Corbin Carroll that made it 5-1.
That put the Halos in a deep hole, and Rodriguez proceeded to slice up the Angels with a seven-run outing in which he gave just that lone run in the first. He scattered six hits while walking three and striking out five on 100 pitches as the Angels didn’t offer much resistance.
Arizona added another run in the third on a single by Troy off Aldegheri to score Jordan Lawlar, and the Diamondbacks added more insurance in the fifth on a double by Ketel Marte that plated lawlar and Vargas to make it an 8-1 runaway.
The lone offense for Angels was provided by Neto, but the game did feature the pitching debut of reliever Brent Kerry, who came on in the fifth with the game already well out of hand. He gave up two runs on three hits, but he did spare the bullpen in his four-run MLB debut. Rodriguez got the win for Arizona, wth a pair of relievers finishing up with a scoreless inning each.
Aldegheri joined the “one up, one down” crew of young starters who have been alternating good starts and bad starts. This one was the latter, and it’s part of the game with young pitchers. It’s easy to assume this is part of his development process, but this is the Angels we’re taking about, so it’s hard to know for sure.
The Halos now head for Sacramento to meet the Athletics in a series that should feataure plenty of offense, with Jeffrey Springs going for the A's, while the Angels haven't listed a starter yet.
